Edwin Bakker: Dutch Football Prodigy
Early Career and Ajax DebutEdwin Bakker emerged from the renowned youth academy of Amsterdam's Ajax. At the tender age of 18, he broke into the club's first team, making his senior debut on January 30, 1983. In the match against Haarlem, he replaced Morten Olsen in the 72nd minute and promptly scored a goal. Ajax emerged victorious with a comfortable 6-1 win, but it proved to be Bakker's only appearance for the club.
International Appearance and Injury
Shortly after his Ajax debut, Bakker earned a call-up to the Netherlands youth team for the FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Joining other talented Ajax players like Gerald Vanenburg and Marco van Basten, Bakker played two games for the team, against Brazil and the USSR. However, it was during the match with the Soviet Union that tragedy struck. Bakker sustained a severe leg injury involving a fractured leg and torn ankle ligaments.
Return from Injury and Groningen Contract
Bakker's injury sidelined him for an extended period, but he eventually recovered and resumed playing for Ajax's second team. In 1985, he signed a three-year contract with Groningen, where he played three seasons. During his time there, Bakker made 39 championship appearances, scoring six goals. He also represented the club in two UEFA Cup matches in the 1986/1987 season.
Career Conclusion and Haarlem Years
Bakker's football career came to an end in 1990 when he played for Haarlem. After retiring from the sport, he faded from the public eye, leaving behind a brief but impactful legacy as a promising young midfielder who was unfortunately cut short by a devastating injury.
