Early Career and Domestic SuccessWalter Casagrande Junior, a renowned Brazilian footballer, graced the pitch as a striker from 1980 to 1996. His impressive club career saw him don the jerseys of prestigious teams such as Corinthians, São Paulo, Flamengo, Paulista, Porto, and Torino. As part of Corinthians, Casagrande clinched the São Paulo State Championship twice, in 1982 and 1983. He played 256 matches for the club, scoring an impressive 102 goals.
International Stardom and World Cup Appearance
Beyond his domestic achievements, Casagrande earned 19 caps for the Brazilian national team, scoring 9 goals. He represented Brazil at the 1986 FIFA World Cup, playing three matches under the tactical guidance of coach Telê Santana. Unfortunately, after Santana's departure and Casagrande's move to Europe, his presence in the national squad dwindled.
European Ventures and Trophy Triumphs
In 1986, post-World Cup, Casagrande embarked on a European adventure, signing with Portuguese giants Porto. Despite their European Cup triumph that season, Casagrande failed to establish a foothold in the team and rarely featured. He subsequently spent four years with Italian side Ascoli, where he showcased his scoring prowess but missed out on major trophies. Later, with Torino, he lifted the Italian Cup and reached the UEFA Cup final, scoring twice in a narrow defeat to Ajax.
Return to Brazil and Final Career
In 1993, Casagrande returned to his homeland and joined Flamengo. With them, he reached the Supercopa Libertadores final, where they fell to São Paulo in a penalty shootout. His career continued with stints at various clubs before he eventually hung up his boots.
Personal Challenges and Recovery
In September 2007, Casagrande's life took a perilous turn when he collided with a parked car and fell into a coma. This incident exposed his addiction to cocaine, and he underwent a seven-month rehabilitation program. Casagrande later confessed to using heroin as well. By April 2008, he had successfully completed his treatment.
Commentary Career and Advocacy
Today, Casagrande works as a football commentator for Rede Globo. He is also an outspoken advocate against drug use and has shared his own struggles to raise awareness and support others facing similar challenges.
