Childhood and Early Life
Born in Baku, Azerbaijan on April 17, 1991, Samira Efendiyeva's early childhood was marked by the ongoing war between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Despite the turmoil, her parents fostered her passion for music and love for animals. At the tender age of three, she joined the Children's Philharmonic Society under composer Oktay Zulfigarov and studied ballet at the "Chicken" ensemble.
Musical Education and Career Beginnings
Efendiyeva graduated from Baku Music School No. 16 named after Koykeb Safaralieva at age 15 and went on to the College of the Asaf Zeynally Azerbaijan National Conservatory in 19, majoring in pop music. At the college, she participated in the vocal competition "Yeni Ulduz" ("New Star").
Musical Style and Influences
Efendi's music combines elements of pop and jazz, incorporating Middle Eastern rhythms. She also performs traditional Azerbaijani folk songs and has sung the national anthem at public events. Her compositions often feature themes of women's empowerment and gender equality.
"Eurovision" Representation and Controversy
In 2018, Efendi represented Azerbaijan at the "Eurovision" Song Contest with her song "Cleopatra." The single caused controversy due to its lyrics and music video, which were interpreted by some as promoting bisexuality and militarism.
Personal Life and Activism
Efendiyeva is known for her love of animals, particularly her white dog Minnie and her cockatiels Chip and Dale. She maintains a healthy diet and enjoys wearing red.
Efendi's Return to "Eurovision"
In 2021, Azerbaijan once again entrusted Efendi with representing the country at the "Eurovision" Song Contest. This time, her song, "Mata Hari," tells the story of the infamous exotic dancer executed for espionage. The performance in the contest's first semi-final on May 14, 2021, placed Efendi as a favourite.
