Biography of Egon Krenz
Egon Krenz was born in 1937 into a working-class family. He completed his education at a pedagogical university and embarked on a political career as the leader of the local organization of the Free German Youth Union (FDJ). In 1960, he became the head of the FDJ's local organization in Rostock. Krenz furthered his political education by studying at the Higher Party School in Moscow.
Political Career
In 1974, Krenz was elected as the head of the youth organization of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He later became a member of the Politburo of the ruling Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SEPG). In October 1989, as the socialist system began to crumble and the contours of German reunification became apparent, Krenz assumed leadership of the SEPG, succeeding Erich Honecker. However, in December of the same year, the party ceased to exist, and Krenz resigned from his position.
Imprisonment and Work
Pursuant to a lengthy legal process, Krenz was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison for his involvement in the "deaths at the Berlin Wall" about a year and a half ago. During his time in prison at Plötzensee, he did not sit idly but quietly and peacefully worked at a prosthesis factory. Unfortunately, the factory went bankrupt, and Krenz, who is released on parole for 12 hours each day due to his good behavior, has now found employment with an airline company.
