Biography of El Sayyid Nosair
El Sayyid Nosair was an Egyptian-American citizen and Arab terrorist who was convicted for his involvement in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center. He was also accused, but not convicted, of the murder of Rabbi Meir Kahane, an American and Israeli religious and political leader, in November 1990.
Early Life and Immigration
El Sayyid Nosair was born on November 16, 1955, in Port Said, Egypt. In 1981, he immigrated to the United States and settled in New Jersey and New York City. He became a naturalized American citizen in 1989.
Involvement in Extremist Activities
Nosair expressed his disapproval of American culture and what he perceived as moral decay. He was active in the al-Farouq Mosque in Brooklyn, which received support from the organization "Maktab al-Khadamat," founded by Osama bin Laden and Abdullah Yusuf Azzam in Pakistan in 1984. The organization aimed to recruit fighters and raise funds for Arab mujahideen during the Soviet-Afghan War.
Connection to Ali Mohamed and Radical Group
Ali Mohamed, a sergeant at Fort Bragg military base, provided support and assistance to the religious group, including supplying them with materials intended for the US military. Members such as Mahmoud Abouhalima and Nosair practiced shooting at a range on Long Island and openly wore t-shirts with Islamist slogans.
Murder of Meir Kahane
In 1990, Nosair was charged with the murder of Meir Kahane, the founder of the extremist Jewish Defense League and a member of the Israeli Knesset. The murder took place on November 5, 1990, after Kahane's speech to Orthodox Jews in a lecture hall at the Marriott East Side Hotel in Manhattan. Nosair engaged in a shootout with postal police officer Carlos Acosta and was eventually apprehended and taken to the hospital.
Legal Proceedings and Increased Sentence
During the trial, Nosair showed little interest in the proceedings and instead drew pictures of Princess Diana. Despite numerous eyewitness testimonies, the jury found Nosair not guilty of murder but guilty of assault and illegal weapon possession. While serving his sentence, Nosair's accomplices planned to free him by carrying out a truck bombing. The attack was foiled, but during the trial of the conspirators, led by Omar Abdel-Rahman, also known as the Blind Sheikh, Nosair's sentence was increased to life imprisonment without parole.
Current Status
El Sayyid Nosair is currently serving his sentence at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana.
