Mенча Karnicheva: A Controversial Bulgarian Revolutionary
Mенча Karnicheva, born in 1895 as Eufemia Karastoyanova, was a Bulgarian revolutionary and terrorist known for her involvement in the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO).
Early Life and Political Affiliations
Karnicheva was born into an Aromanian family in Krushevo, now part of North Macedonia. She studied in Munich and became involved in the women's movement for Macedonian liberation. However, she later disillusioned with the left-wing of the Macedonian movement and joined the IMRO.
Assassination of Todor Panitsa
In 1925, Karnicheva gained notoriety for her assassination of Todor Panitsa, a prominent Bulgarian revolutionary-socialist and a key figure in the Macedonian movement. She gained the trust of Panitsa's family in Vienna and fatally shot him at the Burgtheater on May 8, 1925. This act cemented her status as a ruthless and determined revolutionary.
Imprisonment and Release
Karnicheva was sentenced to 8 years in prison by an Austrian court for the assassination. However, due to her poor health and declining condition, she was released from prison by the Austrian Supreme Court in December 1925.
Marriage to Ivan Mihailov
On December 25, 1926, Karnicheva married Ivan Mihailov, the leader of IMRO. Rumors suggest that the condition for marriage involved the assassination of Mihailov's rival, Todor Panitsa.
Exile and Death
In 1934, Karnicheva and Mihailov fled into exile, living in various countries including Turkey, Poland, Croatia, Spain, and Italy. Karnicheva passed away in Rome, Italy, due to illness. Her death marked the end of a controversial life characterized by both determination and violence.
