Early Life and Education
Eldar Shibanov was born on 1986 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, to a family of architects.He attended School-Gymnasium No. 51 in Almaty and later graduated from KazGASA with a degree in Architecture of Residential and Public Buildings.
Career in Film
Shibanov began his film career at the age of 18.He co-founded and became the CEO of the Production Company "ARTDEPARTMENT.KZ" in 2010. Shibanov, his mother Yuliya Levitskaya, and brother Dias Shibanov collaborate on film projects.
Special Effects and Makeup
Through "ARTDEPARTMENT.KZ," Shibanov and Levitskaya introduced specialized makeup (plastic makeup) and special effects (SFX Makeup&SFX) to the Kazakh film industry.They trained under masters in Hollywood and the Czech Republic, applying their knowledge to numerous feature films.
In 2018, Shibanov and Levitskaya showcased their work at the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) in Los Angeles.Today, they teach specialized makeup at "ARTDEPARTMENT.KZ" based on their own program.
Film Directing
Shibanov has directed six short films, with "Sex, Fear, and Hamburgers" being the most successful.It was the first short film from Kazakhstan to be selected for the official Orizzonti Short program at the 75th Venice International Film Festival.
Shibanov has received accolades such as the AFA 2016 Scholarshipand attended the New York Film Academy (NYFA) in 2017. He also participated in Berlinale Talents 2021.
Recent Projects
Shibanov and Levitskaya's film project, "Mountain Onion," was selected as a finalistfor the Biennale College Cinema 2021-22. It marks the first time a Kazakhstani film project has been accepted into the Biennale. The full-length film will premiere at the 79th Venice Film Festival in 2022.
