Childhood and Early Life
Eldos Smetov was born on September 9, 1992, in the village of Lugovaya, Kazakhstan. His family moved to Taraz when he was young, where he began practicing judo.
Early Career and Achievements
Smetov first rose to prominence after winning a republican tournament in Almaty at the age of 6. He later moved to the prestigious Khajimukan Munaitpasov Sports Boarding School in Astana and continued to dominate junior competitions.
Early International Success
Smetov made his international debut in Germany and quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. He won a bronze medal at the Asian Games and then went on to claim the gold medal at the World Youth Championships in Morocco.
Senior Career and Olympic Silver
Smetov made his senior international debut in 2011 and quickly ascended the rankings. He won several major medals, including silver at the Asian Games in Bangkok and gold at the Asian Games in South Korea. At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, he won the silver medal, defeating his compatriot Rustam Ibraev in the final.
World Champion
In 2015, Smetov triumphed at the World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, becoming the first Kazakhstani to win a world title in judo. He continued his success with a gold medal at the Asian Championships in Tashkent in 2016.

After missing the 2019 season due to injuries, Smetov returned to the international circuit in 2021 and claimed a bronze medal at the World Championships in Tokyo. He also competed at the Tokyo Olympics, reaching the semifinals and finishing in fifth place.

Smetov married his wife, Balauza, in 2017. The couple has three children. Smetov's brother, Zhandos, is also a professional judoka.
