Early Life and CareerEleanor Audley was born on November 19, 1905, in New York City. She began her career as a radio actress in Hollywood during the 1940s and 1950s, performing in shows such as "Escape," "Suspense," and radio adaptations of "My Favorite Husband" and "Father Knows Best."
Disney Villainess
Audley is best known for providing the powerful and distinct voices of several infamous Disney villainesses. In "Cinderella" (1950), she voiced Lady Tremaine, the evil stepmother. In "Sleeping Beauty" (1959), she portrayed Maleficent, the cruel and malevolent sorceress. Animator Marc Davis incorporated Audley's facial features into these characters' designs.
Animated Roles
In addition to her Disney villainesses, Audley also voiced Madame Leota in the popular Disney attraction "Haunted Mansion." She appeared as the disembodied head in a crystal ball, guiding the Evermore family through the mansion's 999 ghosts.
Television Career
Audley became a well-known character actress through her numerous television roles. From the mid-1950s, she appeared in episodes of shows such as "I Love Lucy," "Perry Mason," "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "Peyton Place," and "The Big Valley."
Notable Performances
Audley had several recurring roles. She played Eunice Douglas, Oliver Douglas's mother, in the family comedy "Green Acres" (1965-1971). In "The Beverly Hillbillies," she portrayed Millicent Schuyler-Potts, the headmistress of Jethro Bodine's reform school. Many of Audley's characters were wealthy aristocrats.
Legacy
Eleanor Audley passed away from respiratory failure on November 25, 1991, in North Hollywood, California, at the age of 86. She was buried at Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery. Her iconic voice continues to be associated with Disney's most unforgettable villains, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of animation and entertainment.
