Elena Bonetti: A Prominent Mathematician and Politician

Early Life and Academic Career

Elena Bonetti was born in Milan, Italy, and pursued her higher education at the prestigious University of Pavia, where she earned a degree in mathematics. In 2002, she obtained her doctorate from the University of Milan and subsequently commenced teaching mathematical analysis at the same institution.

Political Involvement

Bonetti's involvement in politics began with her support for the former leader of the Democratic Party, Matteo Renzi. She contributed to the establishment of his political school in Barga, Tuscany. In 2014, she joined the chorus of voices calling for the recognition of same-sex unions by the state and a change in the Church's stance, asserting that "everyone has the right to love and be loved."

Bonetti held leadership positions in the Italian Catholic Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts Association (AGESCI). She ascended to the Democratic Party's national secretariat in 2017. In the 2018 parliamentary elections, she ran as a candidate in Lombardy on the DP's list, but ultimately did not secure a seat in the Chamber of Deputies.

Political Career

Minister for Equal Opportunities and the Family

On September 4, 2019, Bonetti was appointed Minister for Equal Opportunities and the Family in the second government of Giuseppe Conte. She was sworn into office as part of the new cabinet on September 5.

Italia Viva and Resignation

On September 17, 2019, Bonetti was named among the politicians who supported Matteo Renzi's new party, Italia Viva (Living Italy). On January 13, 2021, she resigned from her ministerial post in accordance with the party's decision, citing disagreement with the government's policies, particularly its refusal to utilize the European Stability Mechanism for financial recovery.

Return to the Government

On February 13, 2021, Mario Draghi's government was sworn in, with Elena Bonetti resuming her previous role as Minister for Equal Opportunities and the Family.
