Sascha Esken: German Politician and Co-Leader of the SPD
Early Life and Political StartSascha Esken was born in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. A trained programmer, she joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1990. Her political career began at the municipal level, where she represented parents' interests in the city of Calw. Esken also served as deputy head of the statewide parents' council in Baden-Württemberg from 2012 to 2014.
Rise in the SPD
In 2013, Esken became deputy chair of the SPD's Northwest regional branch. She was elected to the Bundestag (German parliament) the same year and re-elected in 2017 despite being placed near the bottom of the party's electoral list. In 2018, she was part of the SPD's working group for coalition government negotiations.
Co-Leader of the SPD
On December 6, 2019, Esken was elected co-leader of the SPD at the party's congress in Berlin, receiving 76% of the delegates' votes. She shared the leadership role with Norbert Walter-Borjans, who received 90% of the vote.
Political Views
Esken is a member of the SPD's left-wing faction. She is known for her focus on social justice and equality, advocating for policies such as higher minimum wages, affordable housing, and improved healthcare.
