Early Life and Education
Elizabeth McRae was born in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1936 to Dorothy Hendon, an Alabama native, and James McRae, an attorney. The family relocated to Fayetteville, North Carolina, where Elizabeth spent her formative years. She attended local public schools until her parents enrolled her at Holton-Arms School in Washington, D.C., for her secondary education. Upon graduating, McRae decided to pursue a career in acting.
Break into Acting
In 1956, McRae auditioned for Otto Preminger's film adaptation of "Saint Joan." While she did not secure a role, the experience motivated her to move to New York City in October of that year. She studied under Uta Hagen at the Herbert Berghof Studio for two years and gained stage experience in Broadway and summer stock productions.
Television Success
In the late 1950s, McRae relocated to Los Angeles for film and television auditions. She continued her acting education at the California Institute of the Arts and brushed up on her painting skills at the Otis College of Art and Design. She re-auditioned for Otto Preminger and landed the role of Mary Pilant in the 1959 crime drama "Anatomy of a Murder." McRae's television debut came shortly thereafter as a witness in the series "Courtroom."
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, McRae became a regular fixture on television, appearing in a wide range of dramas and sitcoms. She starred in multiple episodes of "Route 66" and "Surfside 6." During the 1980s, she primarily focused on soap operas.
Personal Life
Elizabeth McRae married Amos Morhead Stack Jr. in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on August 12, 1955. The details of their marriage and divorce are not publicly known. In 1965, she married actor and writer Nedrick Young, but tragedy struck three years later when Young died of heart disease at the age of 54. In 1969, McRae married Charles Day Halsey Jr., an executive at Wells Fargo, in Palm Springs, California.
