Biography of Elizabeth Shue
Elizabeth Shue, an American actress, gained true fame after breaking away from her established image and taking on the role of a prostitute. She is best known for her roles in films such as "The Karate Kid," "Adventures in Babysitting," "Cocktail," "Back to the Future Part II-III," "Leaving Las Vegas," "The Saint," and "Hollow Man." Shue has won five major acting awards and has been nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA.
Early Life
Elizabeth Shue was born in Wilmington, Delaware. Her mother held a high position in a bank, while her father was involved in real estate and law. When Shue was 9 years old, her parents divorced. She spent her childhood in New Jersey and was extremely close to her brothers, one of whom also pursued an acting career.
Education and Early Career
After finishing school, Elizabeth Shue attended Wellesley College. To pay for her education, she appeared in television commercials. In 1985, she transferred to Harvard University but dropped out just a month before receiving her degree to focus entirely on her acting career. However, she returned to university in 1997 and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Political Science in 2000.
Acting Career
Elizabeth Shue's first acting experience was in television commercials, including roles for Burger King, De Beers, and Hellman's mayonnaise. Her first film role came in 1984 in "The Karate Kid," where she played the love interest of the main character. She then landed her first leading role in the comedy "Adventures in Babysitting" and followed it up with "Cocktail," in which she portrayed the love interest of Tom Cruise's character. She also appeared in the comedies "Soapdish" and "The Marrying Man" alongside Sally Field and Alec Baldwin, respectively.
In 1989 and 1990, Shue played the character Jennifer Parker, Marty McFly's love interest, in the films "Back to the Future Part II" and "Back to the Future Part III." She replaced Claudia Wells, who portrayed the character in the first film, due to personal reasons. In 1990, Shue made her Broadway debut in the play "Some American Abroad" at the Lincoln Center. She continued her stage career with a role in Tina Howe's play "Birth and After Birth" in 1993.
While Shue often played the "girl next door" type of character, she took a risk by portraying a prostitute in the 1995 film "Leaving Las Vegas" alongside Nicolas Cage. This experiment paid off, as she received an Oscar nomination for her performance. Following this success, Shue received offers for new and interesting roles in major film projects. In 1998, she played a femme fatale in the noir film "Palmetto."
Elizabeth Shue continues to actively work in film and television. Some of her recent roles include Sheriff Julie Forester in the horror film "Piranha 3D" and a role in the television series "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."
