Danish Ambassador to Ivan the Terrible

In 1572, the Danish ambassador, Isenbreg, arrived at the court of Ivan the Terrible. He carried a letter from King Frederick of Denmark, which assured the tsar of their unwavering friendship. However, the letter also contained complaints that Russian forces were seizing territory and fishing grounds from Norway. King Frederick further requested a safe conduct ("dangerous грамоты") for ambassadors from Emperor Maximilian, who were en route to Moscow.

Ivan's Response

Ivan responded to the letter on July 27th of the same year. In addition to Isenbreg, a messenger from Magnus of Livonia, named Kaspar, also accompanied the Danish embassy. Ivan addressed the complaints raised by King Frederick and discussed the possibility of resolving the territorial disputes amicably.

Safe Conduct for Imperial Ambassadors

Regarding the requested safe conduct for the imperial ambassadors, Ivan granted it, allowing the ambassadors to travel safely to Moscow to conduct diplomatic negotiations. This gesture demonstrated Ivan's willingness to engage in dialogue and maintain diplomatic relations with foreign powers.
