Early Life and Education
Elizabeth George was born in Warren, Ohio, but moved to the San Francisco Bay Area when she was just one and a half years old. She attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in English and earned her teaching credential.
Teaching Career and Doctorate
In addition to teaching English at a high school, George pursued a doctorate in psychology. She was named Orange County, California, Teacher of the Year during her teaching career.
Literary Debut and Breakthrough
Elizabeth George retired from teaching after 13 and a half years to focus on writing. Her debut novel, "A Great Deliverance," was published in 1988. It introduced Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, Lord Asherton, a nobleman from Scotland Yard; his working-class partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers; and Lady Helen Clyde, Thomas Lynley's love interest and eventual wife.
The novel garnered numerous awards and accolades, including the Anthony Award, the Agatha Award, the French literary award Grand Prix de Littérature Policière, an Edgar Award nomination, and a Macavity Award nomination.
