Ella Mitsis was a renowned Soviet athlete who excelled in multiple sports, including track and field, volleyball, and basketball. Her athleticism and versatility made her a standout in the sporting world of her time.

Early Successes in Athletics and Volleyball

Mitsis began her athletic journey at the tender age of 13 with track and field. By 16, she was a regular participant in Moscow track and field competitions. In 1931, at the age of 18, she achieved her first major success by winning the Moscow championship in the military all-around competition, which included swimming and shooting alongside track and field events.

In 1935, Mitsis took her talents to the volleyball court, playing a pivotal role in Moscow's victory at the third Soviet Volleyball Championship. Despite her success, her love for track and field remained strong, and she soon returned to the sport.

Dominance in Track and Field Five-Event

In 1936, Mitsis made history by becoming the Soviet Union's first female five-event champion in track and field. She went on to win four more consecutive championships in the same event, setting new national records each time.

Beyond the five-event, Mitsis also set Soviet records in the 4x200m relay, shot put, grenade throw, and three-event. However, while her records in most of these events were eventually broken, her five-event record stands as an enduring testament to her dominance.

The five-event underwent a format change in 1945, replacing the discus throw and 800m run with the shot put and high jump. As a result, Mitsis's five-event record remained untouchable, a testament to her exceptional versatility and athleticism.

Mitsis's sporting career spanned an impressive quarter of a century, culminating in a fourth Soviet Basketball Championship title in 1950 at the age of 37.
