Biography of Ellen Barkin
Ellen Barkin is an American actress and a winner of Emmy and Tony awards. She was born in the Bronx, New York, to Evelyn (née Rozin), a hospital administrator, and Sol Barkin, a chemical salesman. Barkin grew up in a modest Jewish family with ancestors who were immigrants from Russia and the territory located on the Belarusian-Polish border. She received her secondary education at the School of Performing Arts in Manhattan and went on to continue her studies at Hunter College, where she earned a degree in both dramatic arts and history. At one point, Barkin wanted to become a teacher of ancient history.

Early Career
Barkin pursued her education in acting at the Actors Studio in New York City. According to an article in Time magazine, it took Barkin 10 years of attending auditions and taking courses before she had her first successful audition. Her theatrical debut took place in one of the small theaters in New York City. Simultaneously, she was invited to play small episodic roles in various television series. In 1982, Barkin landed her first film role in Barry Levinson's "Diner." Throughout the following decade, she appeared in a number of films, including "Switch" for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. Barkin experienced a new wave of success in 2004 with Spike Lee's "She Hate Me" and Todd Solondz's "Palindromes." In 2007, she starred in the film "Ocean's Thirteen."

Recent Work
In 2016, Barkin took on the lead role of the head of a criminal family in the TNT series "Animal Kingdom," a television adaptation of the 2010 film of the same name. In 2021, she appeared in the comedy film "Jolt" alongside Allison Janney and Mila Kunis.

Personal Life
Barkin has a son named Jack (born 1989) and a daughter named Romy Marion (born 1992) from her first marriage to Irish actor Gabriel Byrne. From 2000 to 2006, Ellen Barkin was married to billionaire Ronald Perelman, the chairman of Revlon. After their divorce, Barkin received a settlement of $20 million.
