Education and Party Work
Inna Grechkina was a Soviet and Estonian stateswoman who served as the Minister of Education of the Estonian SSR from 1980 to 1988. She graduated from the Leningrad Technological Institute of the Food Industry in 1951 and worked as Deputy Head, Head, and Komsomolg Secretary of the Liqueur Plant of the Tallinn Winery and Distillery.
Between 1953 and 1967, Grechkina held various positions in the Komsomol and party organizations. She joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) in 1954 and graduated from the Academy of Social Sciences of the CPSU Central Committee. She subsequently worked as Head of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Tallinn City Committee of the Communist Party of Estonia, Deputy Head of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Estonia, and Head of the Science and Education Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Estonia from 1974 to 1980.
Minister of Education
In 1980, Grechkina became the Minister of Education of the Estonian SSR, a position she held until 1988. Her tenure was marked by a demonstration demanding her resignation, as protestors believed she was promoting a policy of Russification.
Political Career
Grechkina was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Estonia from 1976 and a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Estonian SSR from 1975 to 1990. After the dissolution of the USSR, she remained in Estonia and worked in the External Relations Office of the Nord Academy, the Russian Private Gymnasium "Polilog," and the Raiment Autotransport Institute. She joined the Centrist Party on March 17, 1998.
Contributions and Legacy
Grechkina developed and implemented programs to improve Estonian language proficiency and actively engaged in community work. She was buried in the Tallinn Forest Cemetery.
Family
Grechkina's daughter, Irina Antonyuk, born in 1956, served as the director of the Russian Gymnasium in Haabersti.
