Early Life and Career

Isaac'smusical journey began under the patronage of Bishop Giuliano della Rovere in Avignon. Rovere's elevation to the papacy as Pope Julius II saw Isaac following suit, continuing his service in Rome. From there, he ventured to France, serving in Louis XII's court and composing numerous secular works.

Later Years

In 1513, Isaac returned to Rome, vowing to compose exclusively sacred music. In 1514, he became the head of the papal chapel. However, upon Pope Leo X's passing and the accession of Adrian VI, he returned to Avignon in 1521.

With the ascent of Pope Clement VII in 1523, Isaac was summoned back to Rome. To his dismay, he found his music being performed with alterations. Determined to preserve his legacy, he meticulously rewrote several compositions, including his renowned "Lamentations of Jeremiah," presenting the corrected versions to the papal collection.

After two years in Rome, Isaac returned to Avignon, where he dedicated the remainder of his life to publishing a complete collection of his sacred works, a pioneering endeavor in music history.
