Emanuel Zayas: A Journey Through a Rare and Life-Threatening Condition
Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia
Emanuel Zayas, a 14-year-old Cuban teenager, was born with Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia (PFD), a rare genetic disorder. PFD is characterized by the replacement of healthy bone tissue with fibrous cartilage, leading to deformities in the legs, arms, and skull.
A Growing Tumor on His Face
At age 11, Emmanuel developed a small pimple on his nose, which turned out to be a fragment of his skull bone growing over his upper jaw. Over time, the "pimple" grew into a benign tumor the size of a basketball. The tumor severely impacted Emmanuel's appearance and abilities, making it difficult for him to eat, see, and speak.
Desperation for Help
Despite not being cancerous, the tumor posed a life-threatening risk as it continued to grow, potentially choking or breaking Emmanuel's neck due to its weight. His family desperately sought help, but no one in Cuba was willing to take on his complex case.
Hope in America
In January 2018, Dr. Robert Marx of the University of Miami agreed to perform a surgery to remove the tumor. Marx, a specialist in treating extreme tumors, has successfully helped other patients with similar conditions.
The Complex Surgery
The surgery took over 10 hours and involved a team of four surgeons. Due to the risk of bleeding and airway compromise, it was a highly delicate procedure.
Childhood Symptoms and Progression
Emmanuel's first symptoms of PFD appeared at age two, with his leg and arm bending abnormally. Cuban doctors managed his symptoms until he was nine, when his skull began to swell and deform. As the disease progressed, he became dependent on medication and lost significant mobility.
Dr. Robert Marx: A Renowned Expert
Known for his expertise in treating giant tumors, Dr. Marx has helped patients like Lai Thi Dao (5.4 kg tumor) and Marlie Casseus (7.2 kg tumor). He and his team provided care for Emmanuel free of charge.
Reconstruction and Recovery
Following the initial surgery, Emmanuel will require further surgeries to reconstruct his face. These procedures will involve bone grafts from his hip to repair his cheekbone, upper jaw, and nose. He will also need dental implants to replace the teeth lost during the tumor removal.
A Miracle in the Making
Emmanuel's mother, Melvis Vizcaino, expressed her gratitude for Dr. Marx's willingness to help. She said, "It's a miracle to see how God has placed his creations in the hands of Dr. Marx. I'm so thankful that he is willing to take on our case."
The Uniqueness of PFD
Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia is a rare disease that affects multiple bones. The abnormal bone tissue can weaken bones, causing deformities, fractures, and pain. There is no cure, but surgical intervention can alleviate pain and help stabilize or restore bones. Symptoms typically develop before age 10 when multiple bones are affected.
