Born in Lafayette, Indiana, Davidtz moved to South Africa with her family at the age of nine. She attended Glen High School in Pretoria, where she excelled in English and Afrikaans. In 1983, she enrolled at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, graduating five years later with double honors in Drama and English Literature.

Theatre Debut and Early Roles

Davidtz made her acting debut at the age of 21 with the CAPAB theatre company in Cape Town. She played Juliet in a local production of "Romeo and Juliet" at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre. Her fluency in both English and Afrikaans, combined with her exceptional stage presence, led to a series of notable roles in productions such as "Stille Nag/Silent Night" and "A Chain of Voices," for which she received South African Tony Award nominations.
