Emil Caras: Moldovan Football Icon and Coach
Early Life and CareerEmil Caras was born in Kishinev, Moldovan SSR, and began his football journey at the local sports academy. In 1985, he made his professional debut for Zaria Bălți, playing 15 matches that season. After a successful stint with Nistru Kishinev in 1986, he returned to Zaria in 1987, scoring and appearing in 34 matches.
Caras spent the 1989 season with Tigina-RShVSM before rejoining Nistru for the remainder of the campaign. He established himself as a regular in the following seasons, amassing 34 appearances and a goal in 1990 and 28 matches in 1991.
National Stardom and Championship Glory
In 1992, Zaria was renamed Zimbru, and Caras played a pivotal role in their success in the newly independent Moldovan league. He helped the team win four consecutive championships from 1992 to 1995, scoring 19 goals in 103 appearances. He also reached the Moldovan Cup final in 1994/95.
Caras briefly joined Spumante Cricova in the second half of 1995 before returning to Zimbru, where he won another championship, a Moldovan Cup, and finished as league runner-up.
Russian Adventure and Later Domestic Career
In 1997, Caras moved to Russian club Tyumen but played only three matches before leaving in August. Returning to Moldova, he joined Moldova-Gaz and later Constructorul. In 1999, he rejoined Moldova-Gaz, where he remained until retiring as a player in 2000.
International Representation
Caras represented the Moldovan national team from 1991 to 1995, earning six caps and starting four times.
Coaching Journey
After hanging up his boots, Caras transitioned into coaching. He began at Dacia Chișinău in 2000, initially as a player-coach and later as an assistant. From 2004 to 2008, he took the reins as head coach, guiding the team to third place in 2004/05 and second in 2007/08. He also reached the Moldovan Cup final in 2004/05 and was named Moldovan Coach of the Year in 2006.
Caras subsequently coached Tiraspol (2008-2009), Olimpia Bălți (2009), and served as an assistant coach and translator at Alania Vladikavkaz (2009). Since 2010, he has worked as an assistant to Dan Petrescu at Kuban Krasnodar, Al-Arabi (Qatar), and Jiangsu Suning (China).
Personal Life
Emil Caras is the nephew of Ion Caras, a former Moldovan international and coach.
