Paul de Lagarde

Paul de Lagarde was a prominent Protestant theologian and biblical scholar. He held professorships at the universities of Basel, Tübingen, and Halle.

Challenging the Moabite Antiquities

In his influential work "Die Echtheit der moabitischen Altertümer" ("Authenticity of the Moabite Antiquities"), published in 1876, Lagarde argued that the so-called Moabite tiles, which had been acquired by the Prussian government in 1872, were forgeries.

Significant Biblical Scholarship

Lagarde made major contributions to biblical scholarship. He significantly revised and expanded Wilhelm Gesenius's "Hebräische Grammatik," the 25th edition of which was published in 1889. Among his other significant works were:

"Uebungsbuch zu Gesenius' Hebräischer Grammatik" (Exercise Book for Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar)

"Grammatik des Biblisch-Aramäischen" (Grammar of Biblical Aramaic)

"Die Genesis mit äusserer Unterscheidung der Quellenschriften übersetzt" (The Book of Genesis Translated with External Distinguishment of the Source Documents)

"Die Heilige Schrift des Alten Testaments" (The Holy Scriptures of the Old Testament), a collaborative translation of the Hebrew Bible

Editorial Contributions

Lagarde also played a role in the editorial work of several reference and educational resources, including:

Hermann Scholz's "Abriss der Hebräischen Laut- und Formenlehre" (Outline of Hebrew Phonology and Morphology)

Karl Hagenbach's "Encyklopädie und Methodologie" (Encyclopedia and Methodology)

Wilhelm Gesenius's "Hebräische Grammatik," from the 22nd to the 28th editions

Personal Life

Paul de Lagarde was the father of the art historian Rudolf Kauffmann (1868-1945).
