Biography of Giovanni Agnelli
Giovanni Agnelli, also known as Gianni Agnelli, was an Italian industrialist and the owner of Fiat. He was born in Turin, Italy in 1921, into a prominent family of industrialists. His father, Edoardo Agnelli, was the head of the Fiat automotive company and also the leader of the renowned football club, Juventus. When Giovanni was just 14 years old, his father tragically died in a plane crash, and he inherited the leadership of Juventus.
Education and Early Life
Giovanni Agnelli received his education at the Pinerolo Cavalry Academy and later attended the University of Turin, where he studied law. Despite his education, Giovanni never worked as a lawyer, but he earned the nickname "L'avvocato" (The Lawyer) due to his degree. During World War II, he enlisted in the Italian Expeditionary Corps and participated in combat in Russia, where he was wounded twice. Despite his grandfather's offer to secure him a safe position within the company, Giovanni rejected it and chose to serve on the frontline.
Business Career
Giovanni Agnelli entered the business world in his forties. In 1966, he officially became the head of Fiat and remained in that position for three decades. Under his leadership, Fiat acquired all the leading automobile factories in Italy, including Lancia, Autobianchi, and Alfa Romeo. The company also became the owner of two prominent newspapers, "Corriere della Sera" and "La Stampa." Giovanni was known for his ability to maintain good relationships with influential individuals, including communists, trade unions, and even rumored connections with mafia circles. He believed that what was good for Fiat was good for Italy.
Legacy and Personal Life
Giovanni Agnelli's influence extended beyond the business world. He was heavily involved in Juventus and became the creator of the legendary team of the 1980s. Additionally, he gained fame in the 1950s as one of the world's most famous playboys, known for his wealth, elegance, and sense of humor. Despite his marriage to Princess Marella Caracciolo dei principi di Castagneto in 1953, Giovanni was rumored to have numerous affairs with iconic beauties such as Anita Ekberg, Pamela Harriman, Rita Hayworth, and even Jacqueline Kennedy, the widow of the U.S. President. However, in his later years, he became more focused on his business endeavors.
Giovanni Agnelli passed away from cancer on January 24, 2003, at his home in Turin. Despite his advanced age, he remained energetic and had grand plans for the future. Shortly before his death, he named his grandson, John Elkann, as his successor. Giovanni Agnelli was known for his ability to make the most of his life and take advantage of every opportunity that came his way. One of his favorite sayings was, "I love the wind because I can't buy it."
