Emile Lange: A Pioneer of Architectural Education

Born in Germany, Emile Lange was the son and pupil of Ludwig Lange. He pursued his architectural studies in Munich and later in Paris under the tutelage of Charles Auguste Questel.

Teaching Legacy

In 1868, Lange joined the faculty of the Munich School of Applied Arts. He rose through the ranks, becoming the Director of the school from 1875 to 1912. During his tenure, he oversaw the construction of the school's iconic building, showcasing his architectural prowess.

Collaborative Work and Publications

Collaborating with Josef Bühlmann, Lange published the influential book "Die Anwendung des Sgraffito für Façaden-Decoration" (The Application of Sgraffito in Facade Decoration) in 1867. This treatise explored the use of sgraffito, a decorative technique involving the scraping of a wall surface to reveal underlying layers.

Artistic Expression

Beyond architecture, Lange honed his skills in watercolor painting, creating a collection of landscapes that reflected his keen eye for detail and love of nature. His artistic creations served as a complement to his architectural work, demonstrating the breadth of his creative abilities.
