Georg Kuphaldt: A Master of Landscape Architecture
Born in 1853 in Plön, Holstein, Georg Kuphaldt was a renowned German landscape architect who left a lasting legacy on Russian landscape architecture.
Early Life and Education
Kuphaldt received his formal education at a local gymnasium before pursuing a two-year program in horticulture at the court park in Eutin. He further refined his skills at the Institute of Pomology in Reutlingen, the Zoological Garden in Cologne, and the Royal School of Horticulture in Wildpark, Potsdam.
Career in Riga
In 1878, Kuphaldt was appointed head gardener for the Ostprignitz district. At the age of 27, he relocated to Riga, where he became the director of the city's gardens and parks, a position he held for 34 years. During this time, he established a new urban gardening administration and created a comprehensive green space system that forms the core of Riga's landscape to this day.
Parks and Gardens in Riga
Kuphaldt's notable projects in Riga include Vermanes Park, Viestura Park, Arcadia Park, Shooting Park, Dzeguzkalns, Griziņkalns, Mežaparks, and the Esplanade. He also played a key role in designing the Forest Cemetery and the first phase of Mežaparks.
Contributions to Pomology
Beyond landscape architecture, Kuphaldt was an avid pomologist. His work on acclimatizing fruit trees in northwestern Russia resulted in the publication of his book "Der Rationelle Obstbau in den nordwestlichen Provinzen des russischen Reiches."
Recognition and Imperial Patronage
In 1895, Kuphaldt directed the horticulture section at the All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod. His award-winning design for a fountain garden in front of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg brought him to the attention of the imperial court.
Royal Commissions and Private Gardens
Kuphaldt went on to inspect and renovate gardens and parks in imperial residences, including Tsarskoye Selo, Oranienbaum, and Kadriorg Park in Revel. He also designed new parks, such as Tsarskoye Park in Dagomys.
Other Notable Projects
Kuphaldt's portfolio also includes public gardens and parks in St. Petersburg, Jurmala, Liepāja, and Pärnu, as well as private gardens in numerous estates, including the Orro estate in Toila, which belonged to the millionaire merchant G.G. Eliseev.
