Emil Argand (6.1.1879, Geneva - 14.9.1940, Neuchâtel) was a Swiss geologist known for his contributions to the study of the Western Alps. He is best known for his development of the concept of the Alpine geosyncline, which proposed that the region initially had a single flexure that later became complicated by internal uplifts, eventually forming large anticlines.
Contributions to Geology
Argand's research on the structure of the Western Alps led him to propose a schematic development model for the Alpine geosyncline. According to his theory, the geosyncline originally had the shape of a single flexure, which became more complex with the development of internal uplifts. These uplifts eventually transformed into massive anticlines.
Argand believed that the deformation of the Earth's crust was primarily caused by the formation of large convexities and basins under the influence of subcrustal magmatic flows. On top of these "basal folds," a secondary folding occurs, affecting only the superficial layers of sedimentary rocks.
