Early Life and Career

Emilio de Villota was born in Madrid, Spain. As a young man, he pursued a career in banking while indulging his passion for amateur racing. In 1976, he participated in the British Formula 3 ShellSport Championship, marking the beginning of his racing journey.

Formula One Debut

In 1977, de Villota secured sponsorship from his employer, Banco Ibérico, and made his Formula One debut at the Spanish Grand Prix. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the race. However, he persevered and competed in seven Grand Prix races that year, finishing in 13th and 17th positions.

British Formula One Championship

In 1978, de Villota moved to the newly established British Formula One Championship. Driving a Lotus 78, he achieved two third-place finishes in the championship's первых двух сезонах. His crowning achievement came in 1980, when he won five of the 12 races and emerged as the champion.

Return to Formula One
