Early Life and Career

Emm Gryner was born on June 8, 1975, in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. She grew up in Forest, Lambton County, Ontario. Gryner's musical journey began in Toronto, where she worked as an office worker during the day and often visited clubs to catch live shows in the evenings. Her songwriting talents were recognized when she won a national songwriting competition with her song "Wisdom Bus."

Debut Album and Breakthrough

Using the prize money from the competition, Gryner recorded her debut album, "The Original Leap Year," on Dead Daisy Records. The album's success caught the attention of producer Warren Bruleigh, who helped Gryner release her second album, "Public," on Mercury Records. The album featured the popular single "Summerlong," which became a hit across Canada.

Touring and Album Releases

Gryner embarked on tours with Ron Sexsmith, Bernard Butler, and Rufus Wainwright, among others. When Mercury Records merged with Universal Music, Gryner parted ways and returned to Dead Daisy Records. She released several albums, two of which were nominated for Juno Awards for Best Pop Album of the Year.

Collaboration with David Bowie

Gryner's vocal and keyboard talents led her to join David Bowie's band, with whom she recorded an album. After leaving Bowie's group, she moved to Montreal and recorded the album "Songs of Love and Death," which included covers of Irish songs.

In-Flight Safety and Solo Projects

In 2005, Gryner joined the Canadian band In-Flight Safety, which went on to win several awards, including a Juno Award for Best Video of the Year in 2007. She later collaborated with songwriter Royal Wood and released an album with him through Dead Daisy Records. Gryner also released a solo album, "The Summer of High Hopes," in 2006.

Other Collaborations and Film Appearances

Gryner collaborated with Nathan Larson from Hot One on his album. Additionally, she is a member of the collective The Cake Sale. Gryner appeared in music videos for The Grace, Neverending White Lights, and Age of Consent. She also had a brief role in Michael McGowan's film "One Week."

Radio and Television Projects

In 2007 and 2008, Gryner hosted the CBC Radio One show "Under The Covers," which featured discussions on cover songs. She also co-hosted the television series "Cover Me" alongside Dan Mitchell.
