Emperor Sutoku: The 75th Emperor of Japan
Early Life and ReignKnown as Akihito in his personal life, Emperor Sutoku was the 75th emperor of Japan, reigning from 1123 until his abdication on January 5, 1142. His official father was Emperor Toba, although some historians speculate that his true lineage may have been with Emperor Shirakawa. Emperor Toba and Sutoku are described in historical texts as having a contentious relationship.
Reign and Conflict
During his reign, Emperor Sutoku was involved in several conflicts, including the Hogen Disturbance of 1156. This uprising, which he instigated, resulted in his defeat and exile to the island of Shikoku.
Exile and Death
In 1164, Emperor Sutoku passed away while still in exile. His remains were interred in a mausoleum on the slopes of Mount Shiramine, located near the city of Sakaide in Kagawa Prefecture.
