Early Life and Education

Nobutaka Machimura was born on October 17, 1944, the son of former Hokkaido governor Kingo Machimura. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo in 1969.

Career in Government

After graduating, Machimura joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. From 1979 to 1982, he served as a representative of the Japan External Trade Organization in New York.

Entry into Politics

In 1983, at the age of 39, Machimura entered politics. He held various positions within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, including Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Education.

Political Career

Machimura has been elected to the Diet seven times from Hokkaido. He is a known advocate for the return of the Kuril Islands to Japan. Upon his appointment as Foreign Minister, he named the development of relations with Moscow as a key priority.

Personal Life

Machimura is married and has two adult daughters. He enjoys spending time with his family, as well as playing golf, football, tennis, and hiking. He is also an avid gardener and appreciates classical music and ballet.
