Biography of Enki Bilal

Enki Bilal is a French painter, film director, and comic book author. He is best known for his fantasy comics, including the "Nikopol Trilogy" (1980-1992) and the "Monster Tetralogy" (1998-2007), as well as the science fiction film "Immortals: War of the Worlds" (2004).

Early Life and Career

Enki Bilal was born to a Bosnian father and a Czech mother. In 1960, he moved with his family to Paris, France. It was in 1965 that he met René Goscinny and, following his advice, began to explore comic book illustration. In the 1970s, Bilal collaborated with Goscinny's magazine "Pilote," and from 1975 onwards, he worked with Pierre Christin on the series of "Black Stories."

Comic Book and Film Work

Enki Bilal's most notable works include the fantasy comics "Nikopol Trilogy" (1980-1992), "Monster Tetralogy" (1998-2007), and the science fiction film "Immortals: War of the Worlds" (2004). As an artist, Bilal also contributed to films such as Alain Resnais' "Mon oncle d'Amérique" (1980) and "Life is a Bed of Roses" (1983), Jean-Jacques Annaud's "The Name of the Rose" (1986), and collaborated with Angelin Preljocaj on his ballet "Romeo and Juliet" (1990), based on Sergei Prokofiev's music. Additionally, he illustrated books by Jules Verne.
