Anne Baskins is a former Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary at Hewlett-Packard (HP).
Early Life and Education
Baskins was born on April 5, 1955, in Palo Alto, California. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in history from Stanford University in 1977 and her Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1980.
Legal Career
After graduating from law school, Baskins joined the law firm Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May. In 1982, she joined HP's legal department. Over the next several years, she held various positions within the department, including Assistant Corporate Secretary, Senior Attorney, and Corporate Counsel.
Rise at Hewlett-Packard
In 1999, Baskins was promoted to Corporate Secretary and Vice President. She played a key role in the spin-off of Agilent Technologies from HP that same year. In 2000, she became HP's General Counsel, succeeding Jack Brigham, who had held the position since 1976.
In 2002, Baskins was named Senior Vice President. She oversaw the company's legal affairs during the acquisition of Compaq.
Alleged Controversies
In 2006, Baskins left HP after being accused of using improper methods in an internal investigation into the leak of boardroom information. The investigation allegedly violated the privacy rights of two employees, seven board members, and nine journalists. Baskins maintained that the investigation was conducted legally. Despite an investigation by the California Attorney General, Baskins was not charged with any wrongdoing.
