Egyptian Coptic Family

The Sawiris family is an Egyptian Coptic family belonging to the Coptic Orthodox Church and is the owner of the Orascom Group, which includes Orascom Telecom Holding, Orascom Construction Industries, Orascom Hotels and Development, Orascom Technology Solutions, OTV Channel, and Djezzy GSM. As a result, the influence of the Sawiris family extends to the telecommunications, construction, tourism and hospitality, and industrial and technology sectors.

Family Patriarch

The patriarch of this Coptic family is Onsi Sawiris, born in 1930, who is currently retired. Under his leadership the family business, Orascom, which he founded in 1950 as a small family enterprise, has grown into a conglomerate of companies.

Sons and their Responsibilities

Onsi Sawiris' three sons, Naguib Sawiris (born in 1954), Samih Sawiris (born in 1957), and Nassef Sawiris (born in 1961), manage different groups of companies within the holding. Naguib Sawiris is in charge of Orascom Telecom Holding and Orascom Technology Solutions. Samih Sawiris leads Orascom Hotels and Development, while Nassef Sawiris heads Orascom Construction Industries.

Naguib Sawiris' Investments

Naguib Sawiris is an investor in Mobinil, the main mobile operator in Egypt that has expanded its influence to Algeria, Tunisia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and even North Korea. He has also made investments through partners in Italy, via Wind Telecomunicazioni SpA, and in Canada, through Globalive Wireless and Wind Mobile. Additionally, Naguib Sawiris is an investor in the highly influential Egyptian independent newspaper "Almasry Alyoum" and has interests in television through the OTV channel.

Philanthropic Activities

The Sawiris family actively participates in charitable activities and contributes to the socio-economic development of the country through the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development. The foundation awards the Sawiris Foundation Awards for Egyptian Literature, among other initiatives.
