Early Life and Career

Dawn Evelyn Parry was born in New York City in 1918. She began her acting career at the tender age of five, taking the stage name Dawn O'Day as she grew older. Her breakthrough role came in 1934 when she played Anne Shirley in the film adaptation of "Anne of Green Gables."

Hollywood Stardom

In 1937, O'Day assumed the screen name Anne Shirley and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in "Stella Dallas." Throughout the 1940s, she starred in numerous films, including "Night Nurse" (1940), "The Devil and Daniel Webster" (1941), and "The Bombardier" (1943).

Later Career and Personal Life

After "Murder, My Sweet" in 1944, Shirley retired from films. She had been married three times: first to actor John Payne (1937-1943), with whom she had a daughter, Julie Payne, who also became an actress. Her second marriage, to Adrian Scott, lasted from 1945 to 1948. In 1946, she married Charles Lederer, the nephew of actress Marion Davies. Their union lasted until his death in 1976.

Legacy

Anne Shirley passed away in 1993 from lung cancer at the age of 75. She is remembered for her contributions to the film industry and holds a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7020 Hollywood Boulevard.
