Cardinal Ennio Antonelli: A Life of Ecclesiastical Service
Early Life and EducationEnnio Antonelli was born on November 18, 1936, in Todi, Italy. He pursued his priestly formation at various seminaries, including the Papal Regional Seminary in Assisi, the Papal Roman Major Seminary, and the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. He earned a licentiate in sacred theology and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Perugia.
Ordination and Priestly Ministry
On April 2, 1960, Antonelli was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Todi. He served as a professor and rector at the Seminary of Perugia and taught theology at the Regional Seminary of Assisi. He also taught art history at higher institutes in Assisi and Deruta.
Episcopal Ministry
On May 25, 1982, Pope John Paul II appointed Antonelli as Bishop of Gubbio. He was ordained in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Todi on August 29, 1982. On October 6, 1988, he was transferred to the Archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve.
Archbishop of Florence
Antonelli served as the Archbishop of Florence from March 21, 2001, to June 7, 2008. He was also the Apostolic Administrator of Florence from June 7 to September 8, 2008.
Cardinal and President of the Pontifical Council for the Family
On October 21, 2003, Antonelli was elevated to the rank of Cardinal-Priest with the titular church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte. On June 7, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, a position he held until June 26, 2012.
Later Years
Antonelli is considered a "papabile," or prospective candidate for the papal office. He participated as a cardinal elector in the 2005 papal conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI. He remains eligible to vote in future papal conclaves until his 80th birthday on November 18, 2016.
