Biography of Enrique Peña Nieto

Enrique Peña Nieto, a Mexican politician, was elected as the President of Mexico (Mexico) and a member of the left-social-democratic Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). He served as the governor of the State of Mexico from 2005 to 2011. On September 19, 2011, Peña Nieto announced his participation in the presidential elections in Mexico in 2012 and his intention to succeed Felipe Calderón. He officially registered his candidacy on November 27, 2011. On July 2, he declared himself the winner of the presidential elections, receiving between 37 and 38% of the votes. President Felipe Calderón congratulated Peña Nieto on his victory.

Early Life and Education

Enrique Peña Nieto was born on July 20, 1966, in Atlacomulco. His father, Gilberto Enrique Peña del Mazo, worked at the Federal Electricity Commission, and his mother, María del Perpetuo Socorro Ofelia Nieto Sánchez, was a school teacher. Peña Nieto earned a bachelor's degree from the Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City and a master's degree from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM). He gained his first experience in politics and public speaking while representing his class at public ceremonies during high school.

Political Career

Since the early 1990s, Peña Nieto actively participated in the activities of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and held various administrative positions in the government of the State of Mexico. From 1993 to 1998, he served as the chief of staff at the State Secretariat of Economic Development. From 1999 to 2000, he was the deputy secretary of the State Government. Peña Nieto continued to hold various political positions and worked as a government official from 2000 to 2002. His active involvement in the PRI helped him build his political career and climb up the career ladder.

On October 17, 2004, Peña Nieto officially confirmed his participation in the upcoming elections for the position of governor of the State of Mexico. On September 15, 2005, he was declared the governor, receiving 49 percent of the votes. During his second year as governor, his wife Mónica Pretelini passed away. They had been married since 1993. Her death occurred on January 11, 2007, when she suffered an epileptic seizure that led to arrhythmia and respiratory arrest. Peña Nieto's three children, Nicole Peña Pretelini, Alejandro Peña Pretelini, and Paulina Peña Pretelini, were targeted in an assassination attempt on May 11, 2007, while they were celebrating with relatives. Four bodyguards were killed in the attack. Authorities in Veracruz and Peña Nieto himself believed that this attack was a result of confusion between organized criminal groups.

Personal Life

In 2008, Peña Nieto announced that he was in a romantic relationship with actress Angélica Rivera, a soap opera star at Televisa. They got married on November 27, 2010, in Toluca. Peña Nieto has a son from his previous marriage to Maritza Díaz Hernández, who was born in 2005. He has mentioned that he cares about his son's well-being but has minimal contact with him. In January 2012, Maritza Díaz Hernández wrote on Facebook that Peña Nieto neglects his paternal responsibilities.
