Early Life and Education

Péter Eötvös was born in Budapest, Hungary, on January 6, 1944. He studied composition at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, graduating in 1965. His teacher there was Zoltán Kodály. He then pursued further studies at the Cologne Hochschule für Musik und Tanz.

Conducting Career

Eötvös established himself as a renowned conductor, particularly known for his work with ensembles specializing in contemporary music. From 1979 to 1991, he served as the musical director of the French Ensemble InterContemporain. Throughout his career, he collaborated with orchestras around the world, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Compositions

Eötvös gained international recognition for his operas, which often explored complex social and political themes. Some of his most notable works include "Three Sisters" (1998), based on Chekhov's play; "Angels in America" (2004), based on Tony Kushner's award-winning play; and "Der goldene Drache" (2014), inspired by the Chinese novel.

Other Works

In addition to his operas, Eötvös composed a substantial body of orchestral and instrumental music. He also wrote music for several films, including "Cat and Mouse" (1972), which was nominated for an Academy Award. He set to music poems by Sándor Weöres, among other poets.

Teaching and Legacy

Eötvös was also a dedicated educator. He taught at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe and the Hochschule für Musik Köln. His students include renowned composer Kwame Ryan. In 1991, he founded the Péter Eötvös Foundation to support young composers and conductors. This organization later evolved into the Eötvös Péter Contemporary Music Foundation.

Death and Legacy

Péter Eötvös passed away on March 24, 2024, at the age of 81. He left behind a rich legacy as a composer, conductor, and educator who made significant contributions to the world of contemporary music.
