Erasmus Alberus: German Writer and Poet of the Reformation

Early Life and Education

Erasmus Alberus was born to a schoolmaster in Spessarting, near Oberisenburg-Büdingen around 1500. By 1520, he was studying in Wittenberg, where he became a devoted pupil of Martin Luther.

Proponent of the Reformation

As an ardent supporter of the Reformation and strict Lutheran doctrine, Alberus served as a teacher and preacher in his hometown and various other locations. He became the General Superintendent of Ne Brandenburg in Mecklenburg, where he passed away on May 5, 1553.

Literary Contributions

Poetry

Alberus made significant contributions to German poetry. He wrote spiritual songs, satirical-polemical poems, and 49 rhymed fables collected in the "Buch von der Tugend und Weisheit" (1550). These fables were notable for their clever ideas, smooth composition, and skillful execution.

Prose

Alberus' prose works were primarily satirical and polemical in nature. One notable piece, "Der Barf?sser M?nche Eulenspiegel und Alkoran," was prefaced by his mentor, Martin Luther.
