Family HeritageErki Klassi's musical lineage was deeply rooted in Jewish heritage. His paternal grandfather, Herman Klas-Glass, was a renowned cellist from Tartu. His maternal grandfather, Josl Gurevich, was a choirmaster from Vienna. Erki's mother, Anna Gurevich, was a talented singer who studied in Berlin.
Early Life and Education
Erki Klassi was born on June 7, 1939, in Tallinn, Estonia. After his family's evacuation during World War II, he returned to Tallinn and pursued music studies. He graduated from the Tallinn Music School in violin and the Tallinn Music College in choral conducting. He went on to complete his studies at the Tallinn Conservatory under the tutelage of Gustav Ernesaks.
Career Highlights
Klassi began his musical career as an assistant conductor and percussionist with the Estonian State Symphony Orchestra. In 1965, he became a full conductor, and from 1975 to 1994, he served as the chief conductor and artistic director of the Estonian Opera and Ballet Theatre in Tallinn.
Klassi's prominence extended beyond Estonia. He held prestigious positions as chief conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera, the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, and the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra. He also served as artistic director of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and principal conductor of the Israeli Sinfonietta.
Throughout his career, Klassi conducted over fifty operas and performed with numerous symphony orchestras worldwide, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Hamburg Symphony, the Munich Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Symphony. He was particularly acclaimed for his interpretations of Estonian, Russian, and contemporary repertoire.
Pedagogical Contributions
Klassi was a passionate educator. He led youth orchestras in Scandinavia, Ireland, America, and Asia. He served as a professor of orchestral conducting at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and taught at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.
Awards and Honors
Klassi's exceptional talent and contributions were recognized with numerous accolades. He was bestowed the title of People's Artist of the Estonian SSR and the USSR. He also received the State Prize of the Estonian SSR, the Order of the White Star, and the Russian Order of Friendship. Personal Life
Klassi was married three times. His first marriage to Nieves Lepp produced a daughter, Diana, who became an actress and singer. His second marriage to Ülle Ulla lasted for twenty years. In 1992, he married Ariel, a former piano teacher.
