Biography of Erik Edman

Erik Kenneth Edman, born on November 11, 1978, in Huskvarna, is a Swedish footballer who plays as a left-back. He currently plays for the English club Wigan Athletic.

Early Career

Edman began his training in the youth team of Habo IF, which was coached by his father. He started his professional career at Helsingborg and played for the club for five years. He made his first appearance for the first team in 1997. In 1999, he went abroad for the first time but failed to secure a place in the squads of Italian club Torino and German club Karlsruher SC. He returned to Sweden for a year, playing for AIK. In 2001, Edman was acquired by Dutch club SC Heerenveen.

Club Career

After the Euro 2004, Edman joined Tottenham Hotspur, where he became a regular member of the first team. He was known for his goal from 35 meters against Liverpool. However, after a year and the summer transfers, he lost his place in the squad and was sold to French club Rennes. Edman played for Rennes for two and a half seasons and was a solid first-team player. In January 2008, he moved to Wigan Athletic for 500,000 pounds and signed a contract until the summer of 2010. On March 22, he suffered a knee injury in a match against Blackburn Rovers, which caused him to miss the rest of the season and the 2008 European Championship. He returned to the field for the first time after the injury on January 2, 2009, in a match in the 1/32 round of the English Cup.

International Career

Edman has been playing for the Swedish national team since 2001 and made his debut in a match against the Faroe Islands. He was part of the squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup but did not play. Later, he secured a place in the starting eleven and played in all matches for Sweden in the Euro 2004 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Edman scored his only goal for the national team on March 26, 2005, in a match against Bulgaria from a free-kick.
