Biography of Eric Stanley George Graham

Eric Stanley George Graham was a notorious New Zealand mass murderer responsible for the deaths of seven individuals. He was born and raised in Longford, Kokatahi, New Zealand. After some time, Graham moved to the agricultural area of Kowhitirangi, where he worked on his farm. He lived there with his wife and two children, but his relationship with the neighbors was extremely strained due to his difficult and paranoid personality.

Strained Relationships and Financial Troubles

Graham's relationship with his neighbors worsened when he became convinced that they were poisoning his cows. The income from his farm was not sufficient, leading him to accumulate debts, which only exacerbated his already challenging personality. At some point, he began threatening his neighbors simply for passing by his house. In his abundant free time, Graham would engage in target practice in the backyard of his home, even during the night. It later became known that he was a skilled sniper. His wife also spent a significant amount of time at their improvised shooting range.

Collection of Firearms and Conflict with the Police

Graham kept a substantial collection of firearms at home, which frequently led to conflicts with the police. Law enforcement officials reasonably suspected that such an eccentric individual should not be entrusted with weapons. On October 8, 1941, Graham had an argument with a neighbor, during which he threatened him with a rifle. Shortly after, a constable named Edward Best arrived to discuss the accusation of attempted armed assault. Graham met the police officer with two rifles and forced him to retreat, calling for backup. Three more police officers arrived to assist Best.

The Massacre and Capture

Unfortunately, the conflict could not be resolved peacefully. Eric opened fire on the approaching police officers, killing three of them. Constable Best, the fourth victim, succumbed to his injuries three days later. The next victim was agricultural specialist George Ridley, whom Graham killed the following evening. The day after, Graham killed two more locals. An army of police officers was deployed to apprehend the deranged shooter, who eluded capture for 12 days. The detectives received a clear order to shoot to kill if Graham resisted. On October 20, Graham was wounded by Constable James Quirke from Auckland, and he died in the hospital the following day.
