Eric Segal was an American writer and screenwriter. He was a professor of classical literature at Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, balancing his teaching career with writing screenplays. Segal, in particular, wrote the screenplay for The Beatles' film "Yellow Submarine" (1968).
Love Story
In the late 1960s, Segal wrote a novel about the love story between a Harvard student and a Radcliffe student who dies from cancer in the end. The novel did not generate interest from publishers, so Segal's literary agent suggested that he adapt it into a screenplay, which was acquired by Paramount Pictures. The film adaptation of "Love Story" written by Segal was released in 1970. Starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw, the film received seven Oscar nominations, including Best Screenplay, but only won one award for its music. Since its release, "Love Story" has consistently been included in lists of the most romantic films.
Continuation and Success
After the filming of the movie began, Paramount Pictures offered Segal the opportunity to adapt the screenplay back into a novel. The book "Love Story," which was released before the film premiere, became a bestseller in the United States and was translated into 33 languages. In 1977, a sequel to "Love Story" titled "Oliver's Story" was published, which was also adapted into a film.
