Krøyer was born in Eidskog, Norway, and spent his formative years in Kongsvinger. In 1872, he began his art education in Oslo and later moved to Munich in 1875 to further his studies.
Artistic Influences and Journey
Inspired by French painting and the naturalist movement, Krøyer traveled to Paris in 1881, where he immersed himself in the city's vibrant art scene. Upon returning to Norway in 1883, he brought with him a newfound sense of style and technique.
Artistic Style and Subject Matter
Krøyer's work primarily focused on genre paintings depicting rural life and the Norwegian peasantry. He also created portraits of prominent figures such as Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Henrik Ibsen. Landscapes and illustrations for literary works, including Asbjørnsen and Moe's "Norwegian Folk Tales" and Snorri Sturluson's "The Circle of the Earth," further showcased his artistic versatility.
