André Gilles (1859-1938) was a renowned French cellist and composer.Early Life and Education
Born into a musical family, Gilles was the brother of oboist Georges Gilles and father of oboist Fernand Gilles. He graduated from the Paris Conservatory under the tutelage of Jules Delsart.

Gilles's exceptional talent as a cellist led him to perform in a renowned trio alongside Enrique Fernández Arbós and Isaac Albéniz. He gained acclaim for his compositions, specializing in charming salon pieces for cello, piano, and romances.
Salon Pieces and Popularity
Gilles's salon pieces became immensely popular, particularly his renowned waltz "Loin du bal" (1891). However, renowned violinist Eugène Ysaÿe's unfavorable critique lamented that these salon pieces, especially the waltz, overshadowed Gilles's virtuosity as a cellist.

Despite the criticism, Gilles's romantic compositions, such as the song "Coeur Brisé" and the iconic "Lettre de Manon," left an enduring mark. The popularity of "Lettre de Manon" is evident in its numerous arrangements for various instruments.
