Early Life and BeginningsErnest Lee "Ernie" Hudson was born on December 17, 1945, in Benton Harbor, Michigan. After the passing of his mother from tuberculosis and having never known his father, Hudson was raised by his grandmother, Arrana Donald. Growing up with a half-brother named Lewis Hudson, he developed a passion for the performing arts.
Military Service and Theatrical Journey
Hudson briefly served in the United States Marine Corps before relocating to Detroit. There, he became the resident playwright for Concept East, a prominent theater within the Black Theater Network. Simultaneously, he enrolled at Wayne State University, where he honed his writing and acting skills. With a vision to foster Black talent, Hudson founded the Hector's Ensemble Theatre (HET), which later transitioned to the Yale Drama School.
A Flourishing Film Career
Breakthrough Roles and Cult ClassicsHudson's breakthrough came with the 1979 film "Penitentiary." He gained international recognition for his portrayal of Winston Zeddemore in the iconic "Ghostbusters" franchise (1984 and 1989). In the acclaimed HBO series "Oz," Hudson played the enduring role of prison warden Leo Glynn, alongside his son, Ernest Hudson Jr. He also earned critical accolades for his performance as Sergeant Albrecht in the cult film "The Crow" (1994).
