Ernst Bumm: A Leading German Obstetrician and Gynecologist
Early Life and EducationErnst Bumm was born in 1858 in Würzburg, Germany. He obtained his medical degree from the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg in 1882 and completed his habilitation in obstetrics and gynecology in 1885.
Medical Career
In 1887, Bumm co-founded a private clinic in Würzburg. In 1894, he became a professor in Basel, and in 1901 and 1904, he assumed professorships in Halle (Saale) and Berlin, respectively. In Berlin, he directed the university's women's clinic at Charité for 15 years.
Medical Contributions
Bumm made significant contributions to obstetrics and gynecology. He was the first to attribute puerperal fever and gonorrhea to bacterial infections. His textbook, "Lehrbuch der Geburtshilfe" (1902), became a standard reference work due to its exceptional illustrations.
Bumm also conducted research on eclampsia, uterine cancer, and urinary tract diseases in women. He advocated for improved living conditions to reduce infant mortality and increase birth rates in Germany. Notably, he was one of the first physicians to accept radium therapy for cervical cancer.
Recognition and Legacy
Bumm's achievements were widely recognized. He was elected rector of the University of Basel and the University of Berlin. He received the title of Geheimrat (Privy Councillor) and served as president of the German Society of Gynecologists.
After a brief illness, Bumm passed away in 1925 at the age of 67. A bust by Fritz Klimsch was commissioned in his honor at the conference hall of Charité in Berlin. Today, Bumm's "Lehrbuch der Geburtshilfe" continues to be published in many countries as a testament to his legacy as a pioneering medical figure.
