Archduke Joseph August of Austria

Archduke Joseph August was an Austrian field marshal who served as regent of Hungary in 1919. He was a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine.

Early Life and Family

Joseph August was born on August 9, 1872, in Budapest, Hungary. He was the eldest son of Archduke Joseph Karl of Austria (1833-1905) and Archduchess Clotilde of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1846-1927). He was a descendant of the Hungarian palatine Joseph and the nephew of the last palatine, Stephen Franz. Joseph August was a cousin of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Field Marshal Archduke Friedrich.

He spent most of his childhood in Budapest and his family's estate in Alcsút. In 1944, after the liberation of Hungary by Soviet forces, Joseph August moved to the United States. He later returned to Germany and lived with his sister, Princess Margaret of Thurn and Taxis, in Regensburg, where he passed away on July 6, 1962.

Military Career

World War I

Joseph August embarked on his military service in 1890 as a lieutenant in the 1st Infantry Regiment. He served in various infantry and cavalry regiments before becoming commander of the 1st Hussar Honved Regiment in 1904. During World War I, he commanded the 7th Corps on the Galician front and later the 6th Army on the Italian front.

Regency of Hungary

1st Regency (1918)

On October 27, 1918, Emperor Karl I appointed Joseph August as regent of Hungary. However, the government he established was toppled after a few days during the "Aster Revolution." Joseph August then retired to his estate in Alcsút.

2nd Regency (1919)

Following the collapse of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in the summer of 1919, Joseph August was again appointed regent. However, he resigned from his position on August 23, 1919. During his second regency, he appointed Admiral Horthy as commander of the Hungarian army.

Later Life

After his resignation, Joseph August retired from politics. From 1936 to 1944, he served as president of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He also wrote several books and scientific articles, including his memoirs about World War I, "World War as I Saw It," published in 1933.
