Biography of Leonid Petrovsky
Leonid Petrovsky was a Soviet military commander. He was born in the village of Shcherbinovka, later part of the Dzerzhinsky City Council in the Donetsk region. He was of Ukrainian descent and was the son of the famous Soviet activist G.I. Petrovsky. He became a member of the Bolshevik Party in 1916 and later participated in the storming of the Winter Palace in 1917 as a member of the Red Guards.
Early Career
After the Russian Civil War, Petrovsky enrolled in the Military Academy of the Red Army in 1922. He graduated in the same year and went on to serve as a commander of a rifle battalion and a rifle regiment, as well as the chief of staff of the 74th Rifle Division. In 1928, he completed the advanced command courses at the Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze.
Command Positions
From 1928 to 1934, Petrovsky served as the commander of the 14th Cavalry Division. He then commanded the 1st Moscow Proletarian Rifle Division from 1934 to 1937, followed by the 5th Rifle Corps of the Belarusian Military District in 1937. He later became the commander of the Central Asian Military District and then the Deputy Commander of the Moscow Military District in 1938.
World War II
In 1938, Petrovsky was arrested but was released in 1940. He was appointed as the commander of the 63rd Rifle Corps and participated in battles against the German invaders during World War II. In July 1941, he led the corps in an offensive against Bobruisk, capturing Zhlobin and Rogachev. However, in August, he became surrounded by enemy forces. Despite being appointed as the commander of the 21st Army of the Central Front on August 13, he remained focused on leading his corps out of the encirclement. Unfortunately, he perished during the breakthrough on August 17, 1941.
Awards and Legacy
Leonid Petrovsky was posthumously awarded the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of the Red Star, and the Order of the Patriotic War (1st class). He was buried in a mass grave near the village of Staraya Rudnya in the Zhlobin district of the Gomel region. His bravery and sacrifice remain an important part of Soviet military history.
