Esperanza Aguirre Gil de Biedma

Early Life and Education

Esperanza Aguirre Gil de Biedma was born into an aristocratic family in Madrid, Spain. She graduated in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1974.

Government Career

After graduating, Aguirre entered the public service in 1976, working in the Ministry of Information and Tourism. She later held positions in the Ministry of Culture, including Head of the Film and Literature Office and Deputy Director-General for Research.

Madrid City Council

Aguirre served on Madrid's City Council from 1983 to 1996, eventually becoming First Deputy Mayor and Spokesperson.

National Politics

In 1996, Aguirre was elected to the Spanish Senate. She subsequently served as Minister of Education, Culture, and Sports in José María Aznar's government from 1996 to 1999.

President of the Senate

In February 1999, Aguirre became the first woman to hold the position of President of the Spanish Senate.

President of the Community of Madrid

From 2003 to 2012, Aguirre served as President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid. She later worked as an advisor on tourism.

Corruption Investigations

In September 2019, Aguirre was summoned as a suspect in a corruption investigation related to the illegal financing of the People's Party in Madrid.

Later Career

After her resignation, Aguirre moved to the private sector. However, she remains an active political figure and a member of the People's Party.
